Supervisor, Mid-Office Risk – NatGas
Houston, TX
As a Mid-office risk leader for Gas, you will play a crucial role in supporting the company's growth and managing its gas trading activities. Your responsibilities will include:
- Working closely with the Front Office to provide accurate information on the potential risk impact of transactions and facilitating business growth.
- Developing a solid understanding of market structures and key commercial strategies to lead effective risk analysis that supports informed decision-making.
- Directly supervising and managing a team of 3-5 risk control analysts, including staffing, coaching, and conducting performance appraisals.
- Ensuring that risk control practices and policies align with compliance requirements by working closely with Back Office, Finance, Credit, Legal, and Internal Control.
- Partnering with other leaders to drive operations excellence and liaising with Trading Systems to enhance trading software to meet business needs.
- Monitoring internal limits for Front Office business, ensuring compliance, proper documentation, and analyzing non-standard transaction requests.
- Developing and implementing Middle Office risk policies, procedures, and initiatives to manage business growth.
- Identifying and implementing solutions to improve processes and controls, eliminating identified risks or gaps.
- Acting as the primary liaison for all trading inquiries, assisting traders with complex trades, and supporting team reporting needs to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Leading the Middle Office team in conducting accurate and independent analysis, valuation, and reporting of risk positions and trading results daily.
- Observing and reporting operational risk incidents, including near misses and failures, and encouraging self-monitoring among employees.
- Collaborating with Middle Office teams in Geneva and Singapore, supporting global control management, processes, and procedures.
- Serving as the subject matter expert for North American Gas and other commodities while coordinating with teams related to Power and other commodities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, mathematics, economics, or a related field (required).
- Master’s degree and/or certification in a related concentration (preferred).
- Minimum of 5 years in a mid-office commodity trading organization or on a commodity trading team.
- Experience with North American Gas and/or LNG Markets, including natural gas pipeline fundamentals, gas storage, financial and physical trading, shipping, gasification, and other natural gas/LNG characteristics.
- Prior supervisory or team lead experience (preferred).
- Strong understanding of the energy industry, commodity trading, macroeconomics, risk analysis, and modern finance.
- High level of analytical skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, speaking, and communication skills.
Dimensions:
- Leads and develops a team of 3-5 Middle Office Analysts responsible for Position and Profit and Loss (PnL) reporting.
- Monitors and provides risk assessment, analytics, and controls for the company’s dynamic Gas, LNG, and Dry Bulks business, including LNG Assets and Trading, Natural Gas market access trading, Petcoke, Sulphur, and structured deal transactions.
- Operates in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with time-sensitive, critical activities requiring immediate analysis and communication.
Purpose:
- Ensure that the company’s trading activities in Gas, LNG, and Dry Bulks are fully and accurately captured, modeled, valued, and reported.
- Lead effective risk analysis to support informed commercial decision-making and communicate risk considerations with senior management.
- Provide valuable risk insights and updates to the Head of Risk Control and the Risk Committee.
- Manage and report on all Middle Office control activities with transparency, ensuring compliance with trading limits and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee Middle Office staffing resources and department activities, conduct performance appraisals, and coach and develop the analyst team.
- Optimize and enhance Middle Office procedures and processes while adhering to the Code of Conduct and Business Integrity.
