INTERIM / FRACTIONAL CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
Remote | Executive Finance Leadership | Interim Engagement
About the Opportunity
Our client is seeking an experienced Interim / Fractional CFO to provide short-term financial leadership and decision support during a period of transition. The CFO will partner closely with the CEO, executive leadership team, and Controller to maintain strong financial visibility, strengthen decision-making, and support the business while the organization prepares to hire a permanent CFO.
This is an ideal opportunity for a senior finance leader who is comfortable in a lean, fast-moving environment and can move easily between strategic discussions and hands-on forecasting, analysis, cash management, and executive decision support.
Key Responsibilities
- Cash Forecasting & Financial Visibility
- Maintain short- and medium-term cash forecasts and provide clear visibility into liquidity and expected cash needs.
- Identify potential cash constraints and financial risks early.
- Model the financial impact of significant operating and strategic decisions.
- Monthly Reporting & Executive Analysis
- Partner with the Controller to ensure timely and accurate monthly financial reporting.
- Provide leadership with clear analysis of financial performance, cash flow, key variances, trends, and areas requiring management attention.
- Support Board, lender, and investor reporting as needed.
- Debt & Covenant Management
- Track debt obligations and financial covenants.
- Monitor covenant compliance and reporting requirements.
- Identify potential issues early and coordinate with lenders or advisors as necessary.
- FP&A & Decision Support
- Provide financial analysis for key operating and strategic decisions.
- Maintain forecasts and scenario models as business conditions change.
- Support budgeting, near-term planning, capital allocation, hiring, spending, and growth investment decisions.
- Inventory, Working Capital & Capital Investment
- Partner with leadership and Operations on inventory investment decisions and working capital tradeoffs.
- Evaluate when it makes financial sense to purchase inventory in advance versus preserve cash.
- Provide financial analysis for warehouse expansion or buildout decisions, including cost, cash impact, timing, alternatives, and tradeoffs.
Additional Executive Finance Support
- Coordinate with outside legal counsel, auditors, insurance providers, banks, and other advisors as needed.
- Support fundraising or diligence activities where required.
- Provide experienced financial judgment to the CEO and leadership team on financial, administrative, and corporate matters that arise during the interim period.
Qualifications
- Prior CFO, Interim CFO, Fractional CFO, VP Finance, or comparable senior finance leadership experience.
- Strong cash forecasting, FP&A, and financial modeling capabilities.
- Experience working in a startup, high-growth, or similarly lean environment.
- Experience with debt facilities and financial covenants.
- Ability to operate effectively without a large Finance team.
- Strong understanding of accounting and the ability to partner effectively with a Controller.
- Experience providing financial analysis directly to CEOs and executive leadership teams.
- Comfortable moving between strategic discussions and hands-on financial work.
Preferred Experience
- Physical products, inventory, supply chain, logistics, or distribution.
- International finance.
- Fundraising or investor diligence.
- Government contracting, defense, international trade, or another regulated environment.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means giving leadership confidence that immediate financial needs are being actively managed. The successful Interim CFO will establish reliable cash forecasting, maintain consistent monthly reporting, provide visibility into debt covenant requirements, and ensure strong financial analysis supports major decisions involving inventory, working capital, warehouse investment, and other significant uses of cash.
This engagement is designed to provide experienced financial leadership and continuity during the transition to a permanent CFO, rather than to build the long-term Finance organization.
