A paralegal is a professional who works under the direct management of a lawyer. Their role is put in place to help streamline tasks for the lawyers they work with to make their jobs easier. Tasks may include legal research, helping with client communication and drafting legal documents. Paralegals are not allowed to practice law, but they can be very crucial to the efficiency of a legal team.

A paralegal must have an awareness of legal terminology and legal procedures, but they cannot give legal advice or practice law. Their role is intended to support attorneys in their operations. Their key functions include legal research, case management, document drafting, trial preparation and administrative tasks.

Paralegal path: A high school diploma is required along with an extended education- associate or bachelor’s degree, or a certificate program. Next would be working as an intern within a law firm, or starting in an entry level administrative or support role in a legal atmosphere to get started. Be sure to sharpen necessary skills that would help in your future role including organizational skills, quality communication, and proficiency in legal research and writing. Search for quality certifications to complete in order to further your knowledge. When it comes time to start looking for paralegal roles, it is crucial to attend networking events and join organizations that can help connect you with good law firms to work for as a paralegal.

Entry level paralegals: range is typically $35,000 and $50,000 per year

Mid-Level Paralegals: with a few years of experience, range is typically $50,000 to $70,000

Experienced Paralegals or Specialists: with significant experience and specific skills, range is typically $70,000 to $90,000 or more depending on the firm.
