A bookkeeping certification shows employers your skills in a clear, trusted way. It can also help you learn new skills and move into higher paying roles. This guide covers the main options, what each one requires, what it costs, and how to pick the right one for your career stage.
Why Get Certified
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, bookkeepers may earn certification to show their competency. A credential gives hiring managers proof that you have been tested on core skills like reconciliation, payroll, and internal controls.
It can also support your pay. BLS reports a median salary of $50,670 for bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks as of May 2025. Accounting.com, citing Payscale data from July 2026, reports an average of $61,000 for bookkeepers who hold the Certified Bookkeeper credential.
Top Certification Options
Certified Bookkeeper (CB) from the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB)
- Best for: bookkeepers with two or more years of experience

- Cost: $100 each for Parts 1 and 2; Parts 3 and 4 have no fee
- To keep it: 60 continuing education credits every three years
Certified Public Bookkeeper (CPB) from the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers (NACPB)
- Best for: bookkeepers with about one year of experience who want guided coursework
- Requirements: courses in accounting, QuickBooks, and business communication, plus one year (or 2,000 hours) of supervised work or NACPB’s experience program
- Cost: $100 license application, $50 yearly renewal
- To keep it: 24 hours of continuing education each year
Intuit Certified Bookkeeping Professional
- Best for: people new to bookkeeping or changing careers
- Covers: accounting basics, account reconciliation, and financial statements
- Requirements: pass one exam; Intuit suggests about 150 hours of study first
QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification
- Best for: showing employers you know QuickBooks Online
- Requirements: a QuickBooks Online Accountant account, which includes free ProAdvisor membership, and a passing exam score
- To keep it: a short recertification exam each year
How to Choose
Match the credential to where you are today:
- New to the field: start with the Intuit Certified Bookkeeping Professional or QuickBooks ProAdvisor
- About one year of experience: consider the NACPB CPB
- Two or more years of experience: go for the AIPB CB
- Planning to move into accounting: earn a CB or CPB, then explore the accounting career paths it can lead to
Many bookkeepers combine a software certification with a broader bookkeeping credential. For example, QuickBooks ProAdvisor plus the CB shows both software skill and bookkeeping knowledge.
How to Get Started
- Pick your credential based on your experience and goals.
- Check the requirements on the official site before you pay any fees.
- Start studying now. You can take the AIPB exam before you finish your experience hours; you then have three years to complete them.
- Plan your continuing education so your credential stays active.
Put It to Work
Add your certification near the top of your resume, next to your name or in your summary. List the accounting software you use, and share your digital badge on LinkedIn if one is offered.
A credential can also open the door to your next role. Many bookkeepers grow into staff and senior accountant positions.
