GSE Underwriter – open to 3 locations (Atlanta, GA, Dallas, TX or Chicago, IL)

Job Title: Commercial Underwriter

Department: GSE Underwriting

Department Overview: GSE Underwriting is responsible for pre-screening and underwriting all Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans.

The Impact You Will Have: As a Commercial Underwriter, you will play a vital role as an individual contributor on an Underwriting team.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Structure, underwrite, monitor, and conduct due diligence for multifamily housing products and transactions.
  • Anticipate and resolve issues for customers and the underwriting team.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of Fannie Mae, Fannie Mae DUS, DUS Lenders, and Freddie Mac Program Plus.
  • Apply knowledge of the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae methodology for creating Proforma income and expenses.
  • Stay updated on Part III of the DUS Guide and Freddie Mac Guide for continuous improvement.
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate multifamily projects, assessing their condition, management, and marketplaces.
  • Review third-party Appraisals, Engineering Reports, Seismic Reports, and other relevant documentation.
  • Maintain organized and comprehensive Underwriting Files.
  • Craft precise and analytical Narratives for submission to Chief Underwriter.
  • Ensure timely completion of team goals and initiatives with access to necessary resources.
  • Collaborate with various departments to monitor portfolio performance and develop evaluation benchmarks.
  • Regular business travel will be required.
  • Communication and problem-solving with teammates, clients, vendors, and stakeholders, often in tandem with travel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Standard work hours are 8:30 am – 5:30 pm local time, Tuesday through Thursday, with the option to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of commercial real estate experience underwriting multifamily loans.
  • Experience independently underwriting at least 12 GSE loans.
  • Extensive knowledge of Fannie Mae DUS and Freddie Mac Program Plus programs required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven knowledge and experience in underwriting, including a strong understanding of industry players, trends, and risks.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate data effectively and make informed decisions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills to communicate with all management levels.
  • Commitment to innovation and willingness to drive change.
  • Ability to develop and implement solutions for complex issues.
  • Broad multifamily experience across various financial and product executions.
