Overview
A growing, multi-state organization is seeking a Payroll Manager to oversee full-cycle, in-house payroll operations. This role will lead payroll processing, compliance, and reporting while partnering cross-functionally with HR, Accounting, and Operations to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for exempt and non-exempt employees across multiple states
- Ensure accurate calculation of wages, overtime, bonuses, deductions, and garnishments
- Manage payroll tax filings and ensure timely payment of all federal, state, and local liabilities
- Reconcile payroll tax accounts and resolve discrepancies as needed
- Oversee quarterly and annual filings (e.g., 941s, 940s, W-2s, state filings)
- Ensure compliance with multi-state wage and hour laws and payroll regulations
- Maintain and enhance payroll internal controls and documentation processes
- Partner with Accounting to reconcile payroll to the general ledger and support month-end/year-end close
- Support internal and external audits related to payroll and compliance
- Oversee payroll systems, including updates, testing, and process improvements
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and scalability within payroll operations
- Supervise and mentor payroll staff (if applicable)
- Maintain strict confidentiality of employee and payroll data
- Lead special projects and ad hoc initiatives as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred
- 8+ years of progressive payroll experience
- Experience managing full-cycle, in-house payroll required
- Strong multi-state payroll and tax compliance experience
- Experience preparing and filing payroll tax returns (federal, state, local)
- Solid understanding of wage and hour laws and payroll regulations
- Experience reconciling payroll to general ledger accounts
- Familiarity with payroll systems and ERP platforms
- CPP certification preferred
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- High level of discretion and professionalism
- Ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Work Environment & Expectations
- Office-based role with extended periods of computer work
- Occasional travel for meetings or training
- Potential exposure to operational environments during site visits
- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs occasionally
