Position Overview

Our client is seeking a hands-on Financial Controller. This role will oversee all day-to-day accounting operations while partnering closely with operations to ensure accurate project costing, financial reporting, and commission calculations.

Given the lean structure of the accounting team, this individual must be comfortable operating at both a strategic and tactical level, with direct involvement in month-end close, payroll, invoicing, and cost analysis.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Close

  • Lead the month-end close process, including review of job cost data submitted by operations
  • Ensure accuracy of financial reporting, with a strong focus on project-based accounting
  • Maintain general ledger integrity and oversee all accounting transactions

Cost Accounting & Project Analysis

  • Review and validate job costs for reasonableness, directly impacting revenue and commission calculations
  • Partner with operations to monitor project profitability and cost trends
  • Perform variance analysis and provide actionable insights to leadership

Payroll, Invoicing & Commissions

  • Oversee payroll processing (supported by AP clerk)
  • Manage invoicing cycles and ensure timely billing
  • Administer and validate sales commission calculations tied to project performance

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Utilize Sage 100 (2022) and Salesforce for financial operations
  • Support upcoming ERP transition to Acumatica (target: July)
  • Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen controls and scalability

Team & Leadership

  • Supervise and support a small team (AP clerk assisting with payroll)
  • Act as the primary accounting leader 
  • Assist in onboarding and structuring future hires (Staff Accountant / Cost Controller)

Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA strongly preferred

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in controller, cost accounting, or project accounting roles
  • Experience in industrial services, construction, power systems, or project-based environments preferred
  • Proven experience in hands-on accounting roles within lean teams

Technical Skills

  • Required: Sage 100 experience
  • Preferred: Salesforce and ERP conversion experience (Acumatica a plus)
  • Advanced Excel skills
